One of the most memorable things I saw was a Grey whale.
I had canceled my class dive due to 6-8 foot surf; I went out alone with the idea of finding a compass heading between the two ends of an "L" shaped reef off of Shaw's Cove in Laguna. I guessed wrong with 2 feet of vis, and overshot the end of the reef.
I just about ran into that sucker; his eye was HUGE! I exhaled to hit the bottom to miss his tail. I covered my head, mask, and reg and hoped he didn't have a bunch of buddies. I think 5 o'clock came early that day.
