It was nice, but different. The people treat you more like a visitor to their house than a guest in a hotel. The surroundings can be rustic and almost 3rd-world like. There is often slight and not entirely unpleasant smell of burning trash in the air. They don't have space for landfills. Think of it like a slightly stinky campfire smell. I never felt at risk of any violent crime though.
