Sand spikes are invaluable as a tool for photographers, or critter watchers. It is a fiberglass rod that you can push into the sand to help hold your position in all kinds of water (currents and surges).
It can be used to position yourself for better photographs, to help keep you from drifting or kicking underwater structures, when your attention is held by that tiny viewfinder.
Pushed into the sand, it can be used to steady your camera like a monopod.

These are very lightweight and easy to travel with.

It is not to be used to poke or injure fish or critters
