Just wanted to add my name into the hat. Beach diving is against my religion although I'll pull barbecue or equipment security watch or do boat dives.

SoCal here. I'll do beach or boat.
Ventura area, fairly new OW diver about to take my advance dive class.
Jefe,
Welcome. You're lucky, you're right in line with the good dive sites at Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa and San Miguel.
Pair of divers from Temecula, here.

Hello "me" and Laura! ;)
I just moved away from So Cal, I sure will miss the diving there. Well, my brother-in-law is still there so we are bound to visit.
I miss the Pacific Star, for sure.
Hi, Mikey here....
from San Diego, home of the sunken Canadian warship Yukon, which some of you may have dived.
We have year-round diving, but still wear dry suits in the winter, when the water temp. gets down to 50 F. or so......[brrrrr!]
Dive Safe!
Mikey
PADI Master Diver, DAN DES, O2, etc. blah, blah, blah....
[670 Cold Water Dives]
SoCalDiveGirl, I wear a drysuit all year too. In the summer I sometimes just omit my hood.
I don't think you're a weenie at all! I think you're smart.
I admit I'm sometimes torn when it's 102 F. in the shade in Sept. and the water temp is 72 F., I sometimes find myself looking longingly at my wet suit........but, juggling the weighting all over again just seems like too much trouble, so like you, sometimes I just toss my hood...or gloves. :D
Dry Suit divers ARE weenies!! :p Just kidding,,,, I just say that to make myself feel better because I cant afford a drysuit. YET!
I thought Windoze PC uers were weenies...... ;)
All this Cold water discussion made me go put on a sweatshirt....We need to get you guys to warmer waters:)
It would be nice to have warm tropic waters, but we really can't complain. Socal water isn't really that cold. In a 7mm and a hooded vest, I can't say I've ever been that cold. Plus dry suits are a pain in the butt, too much work (sometimes), can't just hose them off and hang them up like a wetsuit.
LOL...I think 7mm is a pain in the butt:mad: ...but I have not had one of those on since I got certified in 2000:) ......I wear a 1mm shorty....the only way to dive:D
Switching from a wetsuit to a drysuit is like switching from a PC to a Mac, you'll NEVER go back except for tropical of course.
Especially the Viking rubberized drysuits which dry off really fast.
Even if they are wet inside they are still warmer than a semidry or wetsuit. Unfortunately SJ you are wrong about the 1mm shortie being the only way to dive. Theres always the bikini. Much more appealling but only if its on a female body.
Matt
yeah maybe when I grow old and rich (hopefully) I'll get one, but I'll always still surf in a wetsuit, so why not dive in one too.
I haven't gotten cold while diving here in So Cal. It seems almost like cheating to dive using a drysuit...... but it sure would be nice to dive early in the morning and then head to work after just rinsing your hair instead of having to take a full shower!! When u get old and rich will you buy me a drysuit too???
7mm open cell wetsuit works fine for me in the winter, I'll switch to a 5mm open cell when the water gets above 64-65. I can stay in the water comfortably for 4 or 5 hours with the 7mm in 54-55 degree water.
Well once again, I'm either spoiled or a cold water weenie because I will choose a drysuit over a wetsuit ANY day in SoCal!
dmay we must just be warm blooded because I'm fine with my wetsuit, plus during rookie school for lifeguarding I was in 49 deg. F in trunks. Ever since then I've never been cold in the water
The problem with having your own boat is you now need a guinea pig to volunteer to stay on it while everyone else gets to play except them!
SCDG, I am with you, give me a drysuit or give me death! ;)
If I were to do a dive in open water or medium to heavy current, I would most definately want someone on the boat. I feel pretty secure leaving the boat alone near shore or in a secured cove. I just dive the anchor line(s) and make sure it's secure. The best way to do it, though, is to have either 3 or 4 divers so 1 or two stay on the boat.
yea if you have 3 divers you can rotate and you each get two dives in with different buddies
Them's fighting words, lady.
Wow... Scott is here, too. Hey, I'm planning some warm water diving in the next 12 months... Red Sea and a return to SE Asia. However, you realize they are predicting another hot summer... water temps here in SoCal may hit the very upper 70's again. There goes the kelp.
And we would be fighting if we could get our machines to run at a decent pace cause A/V security and all that other background programs slow the hell out of them. Guess its time for an upgrade. C64 anyone?
