Hey there all you divers! I am going to write a general article about diving in CA. I am focusing on Northern California.

I have decided to limit the article to 3 main areas - 2 saltwater:

Monterey (i.e. Breakwater, Pt. Lobos & Pinnacles)

Carmel (i.e. Otter Cove & Monastery)
I consider this one area, since they are so close.

For the Spearfishers, Scuba & Breath Hold Divers

Mendecino coast (i.e. Rainbow Bridge, etc.)

The fresh water area is:

Lake Tahoe

I am trying to include both boat and shore dives in each area. I would love to include some experiences from divers- other than myself. Boats you have used and why. Favorite photo of Pinnacles, otter cove, etc. Ab rules to keep in mind or favorite dive spot of Mendo coast.

If you have anything, hotels you hated/loved or something that makes us stand out from the rest of the world, types of training needed, etc.

I know what to say from my point, but I would really like to hear from others - students, adventurers, etc.

The plan was to dive for 30 minutes total to 30m, swim for 10 minutes then ascend and do the safety stop.

We went to a local dive site that is protected from most winds, it looked flat. We were diving mid-tide so they would be some current underwater but my student had dived in current before so no major problems expected.

We entered the water in just 6m of depth, there was a nice bit of current running and we headed to the deeper channel, we drifted 200m before we got to the edge. Good visibility and 12 degrees made it comfortable, the low light made it dark.

We drifted along at 30m for 10 minutes along a wall then ascended and completed the safety stop. Exiting the water dead on 30 minutes.

My grilfriends AOW is now completed, now she can take me on holiday :D

Sharky had Friday off, Andy was back on his leave so we all set off on Andy's boat. Andy wanted to photograph the brittle stars that litter the area we call the cannon ball site, so that was the choice. The sea was flat and the visibility looked reasonable so I dropped in with Andy and started swimming around. We had dived a little further east than normal for a change to see what we could find. The site was virtually the same bottom makeup as normal, different areas of sand, rock and broken shells but without so many brittle stars. In fact Andy said he only saw one brittle star the while dive, I had come across a few areas that were littered with them. While swimming around I found a few scallops, a length of copper pipe with a brass flange and a cargo hook, so I sent up the lift bag with everything attached. I opened my next goody bag, a few more scallops then none for ages but I did see a Thornback Ray, a Gurnard and loads of dogfish. By this time Andy had gone up and Sharky had come down, I didn't see Sharky. He had dropped in away from my location as the Ships Pilots were buzzing the boat, we had called them 3 times but they never answered. I had drifted towards the channel without realising it and the Pilots wanted to move some ships. The first thing I noticed was it was getting darker, siltier, deeper and with more Scallops I assumed I had gone towards the channel. I looked at my dive computer and it stated one minute of no-deco time left so I decided to surface after extended safety stops.

101 minutes after entering the 18m deep water I exited a mile from the entry point in 26m. The water was 12 degrees and the visibility ranged from 3 to 6m. I had a 12' length of 2" copper pipe, a cargo hook, a pulley block and some scallops on the boat already.
