Three large tiger sharks exhibiting "aggressive behavior" were spotted this morning near what may have been the body of a missing surfer.

Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said in an e-mail that the Honolulu Fire Department helicopter spotted what appeared to be a figure floating roughly 300 to 400 yards offshore of Papiloa Beach on Oahu's North Shore at about 7:30 a.m.

As the helicopter approached, the pilot saw three large tiger sharks about 12 to 15 feet in length in the area acting aggressively and the figure floating in the water disappeared from view.

Lifeguards have posted shark warning signs at the beach and are attempting to keep people out of the water.

The shark warning signs will remain posted until noon tomorrow, when the situation will be reassessed.

The Honolulu Fire Department and city lifeguards resumed their search this morning for the missing surfer.

Lifeguards were notified that the surfer, believed to be a man in his 30s, was reported missing at 4:55 p.m. yesterday. Ocean conditions at the time were rough with easterly winds in the 15 to 20 mph range with gusts to 40 mph and 4 to 7 foot seas
