Noted underwater videographer and National Geographic Diver Carl Spencer has lost his life on a dive in Greece.

Spencer, 37, was diving off a small island in Greece called Kea, when it is reported he experienced convulsions while filming off the bow of the Britannic, sister ship of the Titanic. It is reported that Spencer suffered an underwater convulsion severe decompression hit. It is not known yet why he bailed out to open circuit from his Ouroboros closed circuit rebreather, known in rebreather circles as the "Boris".

Greek Ministry of Merchant Marine spokeswoman, Aspa Papadopoulou, said; "Everything was done to save his life".

As unsuccessful in-flight resuscitation was performed, a Super Puma Greek military helicopter rushed Spencer to the Athens Naval Hospital which has a recompression chamber. "But (Spencer) never regained consciousness." said Papdopoulou.

Carl Spencer was using his "Boris" on this dive. They can't yet figure out why he bailed out. His dive buddy Evan was with him and had given him his gas,and that was running low. Leigh Bishop and Pete Mezley went back down and Leigh gave Evan his 20/30 to pass onto Carl when he needed it.They were at 50m by then, current running extremely strong, then Spencer had some kind of fit. The support diver took him to the surface, Edo and Petar and the rest of the team did what they could.

Carl Spencer's work colleagues have requested that any cards etc be sent to Carl's wife, via the firm address. They will ensure everything is passed on.

Sad! It can happen to the best! He died doing what I am sure he liked and you can't ask for more! Remember the Line for Men of Honor: "Prey you die at 200ft, it will be the closest you will ever come to being a hero"!
