Shazam! I hope the passengers thanked him (or her) later on for not killing them all. That was a bunch of yaw on that approach, he was lucky or very talented to recover safely.

From what I have read, the aircraft was dealing with wind gusts that were upwards of 100 kts. The key word is gusts. To deal with varying winds is extremely difficult. These pilots demonstrated superb skill and judgement in going around and safely landing on the second attempt.

Those that know me, know that I do not hold pilots in high regard. These pilots demonstrated great skill.

The closet I ever came to death, at least in my mind, was landing a plane at John Wynne airport in a Santa Ana wind! 45* crosswind with gusts to 60mph! God take the wheel I am going to die! A 150 is a hole lot lighter and 75mph beats 170mph! I would have needed a change of uniform!
