I plan to buy a Canon PowerShot G9 for underwater use. I have a Canon EOS 30D, but I do not intend to use it underwater. I would like to seek advice on the choice of housing for the G9. I'm not comfortable with the Canon housing because its depth rating is only 130 ft. (or less?). I would also like to know the pros and cons for the top choices. By the way, if you have negative feedbacks on the G9, please let me know. Thanks.

Dennis,

I think your only remaining good choice is the Ikelite housing for the G9.

It looks like you may have one more choice for the Canon G9.
The Sea and Sea Japan website has a press release for a G9 housing.

This will hopefully be available in the U.S. very soon.

Welcome to the SMN Community MV, and thanks for the tip!

The housing looks really interesting, in that with luck it is more form fitting to the G9 rather than using a basic larger housing and just modifying the control positions for a specified camera.

Thanks for your inputs. I like the compact appearance of the Sea&Sea MDX-G9. I'll contact the Philippine distributor to check when this will become available locally.

damn, ¥135,000 for that housing, that is like $1250. unless that price of ¥35,000/$325 at the bottom is for housing alone. lets hope so.

I guess its a mute point now.
We were just told that this housing will not be available in the U.S.

All aluminum houisng for the G9. Depth rating of 120m. Just shy of $1000. It's not the Sea&Sea, this one's by Patima. Looks like it also comes with 3 different ports, basic, WA & Closeup.

HI Dennis,

I have sold many Ikelite housings for G9 and I have heard a lot great stuff about it from my customers. Pricewise, Ikelite wins. Either way, they have their pros and cons.

Patima housings are also pretty good. Both housings functions equally well in my opinion.

Plexi - you can see whats happening inside and see the Orings seal.
Aluminum - you cant see the Orings, but body is more robust.

Its really your choice. Drop by the shop if you have any further questions or email me.

I'm got new Ikelite housing for CanonG9. But I have some problem about the sync cord connection. When the sync cord on the hotshoe is connected with the camera, the focus shown on the LCD is darkened. The camera also doesn't allow any adjustment on the flash mode. This problem happened to me once when I was using the camera on land. Back then, I fixed this problem by using flash. The amount of flash output was decreased to trick the camera. With this method, the picture shown on the LCD was back to normal. I'm afraid that this will be a problem for going for a night dive.

A G9 is a point and shoot right? So why would you take it on a night dive, especially without an external strobe? I have a simular point and shoot and have problems with lighting during the day.

I have used the Patima housing and I find it far superior to any other housing for the powerful canon G9. The depth rating alone is pretty amazing, but if you consider that you can set up the housing so that you can directly connect the strobe system of your choice and also wet-mount wide angle and macro external lenses, it blows the competition away. Did I mention that the whole housing is made of precision machined metal? How about the look, scroll up and look at the pictures, this system is bad &%$, I urge you to give it a try or at least a look. We started carrying them at my store on maui and all the local dive guides are switching over to them. It's the best point and shoot system on the market at this time!

The Canon housing is nice for a first housing and if you are fine with slave strobes and the Ikelite is nice if you already use Ikelite strobes and enjoy Ikelite equipment. (The Ikelite 67mm threaded Wide Angle Conversion lens doesn't really work with the setup for those of you who own that lens.)

The only negative I have seen or read about is the fact that the latch system is pretty harsh at times and I have even read about people getting cuts from it. I have found that the problem disappears if you use the Patima handle/strobe mounting system for either a single or a double strobe setup. As long as you are careful the metal latch system doesn't seem to be a problem. In fact the latch system reminds me of the older Aquatica housings.

I would highly recommend this housing to anyone!
