What is the term used for the physiological effect of the reduced heart rate when getting your face wet?

The only term that I know of is bradycardia, which means a slow heart rate.

are you referring to a scenario were someone goes into cold water and the heart rate slows down - which would be related to some type of shock.

HTH

are you talking about vasoconstriction?

are you talking about vasoconstriction?

Which can cause an increase in blood pressure and increased rate? I think it is more of a Dive-Reflex?

Maybe the Mammalian response!????

Lottie, it is not any of those you mention..
It is a specific term used for the physiological effect of one immersing their
face in water. Goes back 1000's of years. Why our heart rate drops when our face gets wet is unknown.

ie. face gets wet while taking a shower, dipping your face in a pool, splashing your face with water, getting your face splashed with water, etc..

It is automatic, non voluntary effect.
It is referred to as: ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Papa, you win the "almighty medically knowledge" award.

This award is a coveted award which is only given out once every 3000+ years.
You would be known as the only man in recorded history to receive one in the
last 3000 years..

To all the other readers, don't let this one slide by...
Are you gonna let Papa take this award or are you going to earn this award by
figuring out the answer to the question.. What is...?

MDR? What does that mean/stand for?

Don't worry - found it on wiki....i know the answer..i was 1/3 right with the bradycardia though ;)

I believe Papa has won the coveted award... Please add the award to your CV
Congratulations to Papa for coming up with the answer..
The Mammalian Dive Response..

Fellow divers.. The next time you are on the boat, splash your face with water
before entering the water. People will wonder what you are doing and why.
Now you have a piece of fact and a conversation to boot..

Yea to papa!

I have always heard it referred to as just the mammalian reflex; never heard it called MDR before. It is done to conserve oxygen in the blood stream.

I once had an EMT instructor that told us it's very simple to demonstrate, dunk an infant in water, of course for only a few seconds. MDR comes from being in the womb where it's a nice peaceful place with nothing to worry about. So it's a natural born instinct that most of us all have not grown out of.

That is the point you never grow out of a response! We always have it to some extent! The reflex is the same that allows whales and dolphins to hold the breath for so long! Also what many free divers tap into! You can't change it anymore than when the doctor hits your knee with a rubber hammer;)

;)
Actually, hitting the face with cold water institutes a VAGAL response that affects the heart rhythm. If a person has an arythmia, sometimes water in the face will cause a vagal response that will cardiovert into a normal rhythm.

Do I win anything??:p :p

vagal is something totally different here is a link about drowning and MDR it's a very well put together slide show. Take a look.

MAMMALIAN DIVING REFLEX
•PRODUCES SLOWING OF BREATHING AND PULSE, AND IS TRIGGERED BY EXPOSURE OF THE FACE TO COLD WATER.
•BLOOD IS SHUNTED FROM THE GUT, SKIN AND MUSCLES TO THE BRAIN, HEART AND LUNGS.
•ITS SIGNIFICANCE IN HUMANS ABOVE THE AGE OF 2 IS QUESTONED BY AUTHORITIES.

In extreme cases (really cold water and in dealing with hypothermia) it can be referred to as "cold water immersion response", with symptoms being nasty things like uncontrolled rapid shallow breathing (often the cause of drowning when falling into icy water), rapid pulse, impaired mental function, sudden numbness in limbs, etc. When I dive in water near freezing or below, it takes like the first two minutes before my brain resets and I can actually do the dive.

Is that what's called a "Cold boot?"

It is also what saves lives of those that are drowned in cold water and being revived after hours! There also new studies that say O2 is counter indicated for drowning victims and hypothermia. Interesting study on cell death and the blood!

Actually, the original post said nothing about "drowning". My response is correct, using the first post as a question.
