Dear members

My Divemaster let me try his black oceanic shadow mask at Capernwray yesterday; I had heard that black framed masks could give a claustrophobic feeling. It seemed fine (viz was great) but I wondered if the viz was poor would it add to any anxiety felt? Has anyone experienced this?

Thanks
Andy

Black masks are great! I don't know of anyone having any problems feeling claustrophobic in them. They are nice, because they keep the reflection and ambient light from distracting you when taking photos. It also looks cool in my opinion.

I've used both....black is easier to prevent browning, as you dont' see it, but I prefer the clear silicone masks.

Guys are into the all black thing, this stems from their historical preoccupation with being "The Black Knight", who always defeats his foes.

Thanks Acelockco, I will keep this in mind in case I take up the photography side of the sport.

Thanks for the history lesson about days of old when knights were bold, not sure what you meant about 'browning' though?

Isn't the black knight supposed to be the "bad man", while the white knight is on the side of good and be the hero to save the fair maiden???? :D

Well, it is not like guys would wear white fins, white exposure suits, white masks......a guy like that would not be interested in any fair maiden only other knights.

As to Browning, silicone masks can discolor.

For that matter, I don't know anyone that would wear a white mask, white fins, and a white exposure suit.

Does anyone even make a white exposure suit. I know Whites makes dry suits, but that is only the name and not the color.

Thanks lottie, it shows how easy it is to go off on a tangent away from diving. Apart from if you were an albino I think you would have to be extremely secure in your masculinity to get decked out in all white clobber. To I divechick never having the pleasure of going to west hollywood I'll take yor word on that one.

Clear silicone masks are uncomfortable for me when teaching in the shallows or in the pool.
i prefer the low volume black silicone masks.

Thanks for your input Daniel, what is the diving like in Israel? Is it famous for anything?

come on a white mask. You'll look as "cool" as any guy that has white framed glasses. Not like Mr smiley face:cool: sporting the black glasses.

rofl Hbho2g :)

well, the diving in israel is pretty good, got quite a few wrecks in the medeteranian sea deep and shallow. new and old.

In the Red SEa we have lots to see regarding u/w life, a few wrecks also, the corals and marine life are wonderful here. though has been a decline in past few years.... from Eilat, northern Gulf of Aqaba, one can go dive in Jordan, Egypt, Sinai and even Saudi if one has the right connections.
the Red SEa is wonderful. both under the cover of night aswell.
Diving conditions are very very good, reletavely quiet sea in the gulf, ELiat or Aqaba, god vis, great life, night life is good. lots to see also.

thats it basically.

i highly recommend

For that matter, I don't know anyone that would wear ... white fins

Well, one Japanese company manufactures traditional full-foot fins in a wide range of colours, among them white:

And, on the mask front, the choice doesn't have to be black or white. Blue-skirted masks are available too nowadays:

OK, well I like the one for a woman, but definately not for a man! It does not look too good in my opinion. BUT I still think white is not the best choice, I can't imagine it staying white for long on a dirty dive boat or in the murky silt of a quarry or whatever. Maybe for a celeb. who is going to wear it once and never again, ok.

I heard that once you go black, they don't let you go back...
